On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman issued a statement today (10 December) emphasising the need to uphold human rights worldwide and urging immediate action to address ongoing humanitarian crises.
“10 December is International Human Rights Day. Since 1948, when the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this day has been observed globally with great importance,” he said.
In his statement, Dr Rahman stressed that human rights are a sacred trust and a shield for social justice, and must never be violated for political or personal gain.
“Human rights are a sacred trust and a shield for social justice. No one’s rights should ever be violated for political interests or differing opinions,” he added.
The Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer highlighted that societal disagreements or differing views should never justify harassment, oppression, or violation of rights.
“Even in the presence of societal disagreements, insulting, harassing, or violating the rights of women and civilians is completely illegal and unethical,” he continued.
He drew attention to human rights violations in Gaza, Kashmir, Myanmar, and other parts of the world.
Referring to the ongoing crisis in Gaza, he said, “Today, human rights are being grossly violated in Gaza, Kashmir, Myanmar, and other parts of the world. The barbaric Israeli forces are committing genocide in Gaza, targeting women, children, the elderly, students, teachers, religious leaders-no one is spared.”
Citing research from Germany’s MPIDR, the Jamaat Ameer noted that by 6 October 2025, over 100,000 Palestinians had been killed in Gaza.
Describing the humanitarian situation, Dr Rahman said, “Nearly 80% of homes in Gaza have turned to rubble. Medical supplies, food, and water are being blocked. The language to condemn this atrocity is beyond words.”
He also condemned human rights violations in Kashmir, Myanmar’s Rakhine region, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Syria.
Calling for global intervention, Dr Rahman urged the international community to act immediately to halt wars, protect human rights, and seek lasting solutions to international crises.
“On this International Human Rights Day, we urgently call on the United Nations, European Union, and all humanitarian nations and organisations to stop wars, protect human rights, and take effective steps to find a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue”, he added.
